Most sports cars don’t even look to try and add a diesel engine to the lineup for fear of slow acceleration will be the result and the thought that a diesel engine just can’t keep up. Trident Sports Cars Ltd., which is a small automotive manufacturer in the United Kingdom, has built a car that proves a diesel can certainly be put in a sports car, even a super car to give huge power and performance to anyone who wants to drive one. The car in question, and answer is the Trident Iceni, which is a gorgeous long hooded sports car that has shapely lines and a beautiful profile, but the looks of the car are not the discussion today.
As their name suggests, Trident (which takes its name from a small British tribe that had the courage to fight against the Roman tyranny) has taken a Duramax General Motors engine and modified it. The modifications have resulted in a car that can reach 60 mph in less than four seconds as well as carrying a top speed of 200 mph, numbers that rival some super cars and not just sports cars.
Not only does this engine run on diesel, but Trident has engineered the engine to run on biodiesel, paraffin and kerosene as well. The most powerful of the four fuels that can be used is kerosene and is used for a majority of the testing of the car. Not only does the car offer great power and acceleration, but it actually has a really good fuel economy as well coming in around 70 to 108 miles per gallon under the standards of the United Kingdom which differ greatly from the United States.
Placing the 6.6-liter Duramax engine in this sports car, which is the same one used in the Chevrolet Silverado 2500, the engine had 430 horsepower and 700 lb.-ft. of torque when Trident got their hands on it. After adding their own version of upgrades and pairing it with a six speed transmission, the engine now produces 660 horsepower and 1,050 lb.-ft. of torque, making it more than just a little bit race worthy. To ensure this engine in this car was not going to spin out of control, Trident beefed up the brakes and suspension of the Iceni to ensure owners would be able to drive the car with confidence and speed.
This car is offered in three versions, a convertible, a Magna (which has a fastback) and a sports wagon. Even though the interior of the car is not much to talk about the fact Trident has put a diesel engine in a great sports car is more than worthy of discussion. After seeing the power and performance that can be had for this great car other automakers may follow suit in the near future and work to place diesel engines in high-powered sports cars, but only time will tell if that will be the case. Until then, we can enjoy the performance and looks of a unique and interesting car offered in the form of the Trident Iceni.
