2016 Scion FR-S: Affordability in a Sport Coupe

Scion is a brand from Toyota that has revolutionized the car buying experience.  They haven’t taken to the point of Tesla which has to fight with many states to even sell cars, but they have a no haggle way of doing business  that makes it easy for a new shopper or someone looking for a no nonsense experience to be able to get it.  The FR-S is a sports coupe that we have all enjoyed on the road and it’s about time for you to enjoy one for you to drive and have a lot of fun from behind the wheel.

For 2016 the FR-S enjoys upgrades for the interior with silver trim and new stitching on the dashboard.  You can enjoy a better listening experience that ever before with the new audio system as well and know what is behind the car with the use of the rearview camera.  The addition of these features gives you an FR-S that makes a huge difference over the previous models.  The camera is the most significant improvement due to the poor rear end visibility which is present on this car and many other sports cars on the market today.

Since we are already discussing the interior, let’s take a look inside.  You will find a car that is a driver’s dream and offers plenty of legroom and headroom for the driver and the passenger.  The Scion does offer all the driver oriented features you want and with upgraded materials the interior looks fantastic and feels great.  This is a sports coupe which means a tiny rear seat which is better left for added luggage when you want to take a road trip.  Other than this small back seat the FR-S feels great and is a lot of fun to be in and drive.

The driving of the FR-S offers a suspension, steering, chassis and entire build that are all track oriented and road worthy.  This car gives you the confidence to take it through a turn at high speeds and know the car will continue to perform.  As a car built for the road even the most inexperienced driver can enjoy the fun on the road while an expert driver may even choose the FR-S for the drive on any surface which is fully engaged and athletic, both attributes you want from your sports car no matter what the price was.

Only one engine is found under the hood of the FR-S and the surprise might be the fact that it’s small and not overly powerful.  The engine is a 2.0-liter flat four-cylinder engine that gives you 200 horsepower and 151 lb.-ft. of torque.  This engine will be attached to either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission to give you a fuel mileage of 22 city/30 hwy mpg for the manual and 25 city/34 hwy mpg for the automatic.  Depending upon what kind of driving you will do will determine which transmission is right for you.  For sporty track time and fun on the open roads you might enjoy the manual which keeps you engaged in the drive, but if the FR-S is going to be your daily driver the automatic will be better.

From the outside you can easily see the sportiness of the car and even though the engine isn’t overly powerful the car is peppy and athletic to be comparable to the Mazda Miata which has 45 less horsepower than the FR-S.  The exterior of this car gives you exciting lines and cures to enjoy as it looks like it’s giving a nod to the Datsun sports coupes of the 1970s which were excellent small cars to be enjoyed.  The look offers a set of wide fenders, sleek headlights and sporty taillights all to provide you with the look of a car that you want to take out on the road.

As far as pricing, this is one of the most affordable sport coupes, giving us a great ride.  The FR-S begins at $26,100 and can move up a bit in the pricing structure which includes a $1,200 BeSpoke audio system, the $1,100 automatic transmission and a few other features that can move the price upward.  For the prices expected for this car, let’s take a look next at the features that come in the FR-S.

Buying this car is supposed to be easy which means a majority of the features are already in place in the base model of the FR-S.  This includes air conditioning, cruise control, power windows, power mirrors and door locks, 17-inch alloy wheels, Bluetooth connectivity, the new touch screen audio system, an auxiliary port and USB port, stability control, traction control, six airbags, Smart Stop and much more.  This gives you a car that is fully ready for you to have a great time out on the road.

When you look for optional features for this car there are only a couple choices.  One is the change to the automatic transmission and the other is the BeSpoke audio system which includes integrated navigation features.  Dealers can offer several other options to add to the car but the only other options from the manufacturer include color choices for the exterior, 18-inch wheels, better brakes, lowering springs and a rear spoiler.  With this small list you can make your choice very easily and update the car a bit to what you want.

Two of our favorite features for this car are the touch screen radio and the Torsen Limited-Slip differential.  The touch screen radio offers easy navigation between stations on an easy to read screen and the differential allows for more grip and better control on the road.  When you want a sports car with no-haggle pricing and easy to enjoy and understand features the Scion FR-S makes a great choice.  You can get in, start the car and enjoy the ride without the worry of a massive amount of features that need to be added to the car.
